Literacy

Our belief at Robert Rundle is that the way teachers structure their learning environment and the way students spend their time influences the level of reading and writing proficiency students can attain by the end of the academic year.

We do this by implementing the Daily 5 literacy framework which instills behaviours of independence, creates a classroom of highly engaged readers, writers, thinkers and learners and provides teachers with the time and structure to meet diverse student needs.  The learning environment and the teacher's role shifts from "managing" students and putting out fires to creating routines and procedures that foster independent literacy behaviours.

The Daily 5 Literacy Framework

  • Relies on the teaching on independence
  • Building of stamina to ensure longer period of time that students are successfully reading and writing
  • Incorporates mini-lessons that target specific reading and writing skills and strategies
  • Gives students substantial time to read and write
  • Integrates reading and writing
  • Incorporates a variety of clearly defined instructional routines that accelerate learning
  • Supports students in articulating and setting literacy goals

To compliment the literacy framework, we use CAFE which is the literacy system that helps teachers to assess, instruct and monitor student progress in four key components:

Comprehension (I understand what I read)
Accuracy (I can read the words)
Fluency (I can read accurately, with expression and at a rate that matches the text)
Expanding Vocabulary (I know, find and use interesting words)

Teachers choose from whole group instruction, small group instruction and one-on-one conferring to meet the needs of their students and to move them forward in their literacy journey.

Mathematics

Mathematics is the science of patterns and relationships. It is the language and logic of our technological world. Mathematical power is the ability to explore, to conjecture, to reason logically and to use a variety of mathematical methods effectively to solve problems.

Science

Science is a way of making sense of the natural world. As citizens, we are asked to make decisions about social issues that involve science and technology. As workers, we have occupations that increasingly involve science and technology.

Social Studies

Social Studies is the integrated study of the social sciences to prepare young people to become responsible citizens. Responsible citizens display social understanding and civic efficacy.
